The Most Popular Christmas Tree Decorations

Whether you’ve opted for a towering Douglas fir or a classic Fraser fir, your choice of Christmas trees says a lot about you. Often, though, what rests within your tree’s branches can say as much about your Christmas spirit as the branches themselves.

Even before the invention of glass baubles by Hans Greiner in the late 1500s, people have adorned their trees with all manner of holiday decorations. Dried pastries, fresh apples, fiberboard cutouts and plastic trinkets… the possibilities are truly endless. Today, we’re going to look at a couple of the most enduring designs and how they can be used to embellish your Christmas tree.

Star tree-toppers

It only makes sense to start with the most iconic Christmas tree decoration: the star topper. In Hans Christian Anderson’s story, “The Fir-Tree,” he describes a Danish, Balsam fir Christmas tree, saying, “On one branch there hung little nets cut out of colored paper, and each net was filled with sugarplums; and among the other boughs gilded apples and walnuts were suspended, looking as though they had grown there, […] and at the very top a large star of gold tinsel was fixed.”

Naturally, with the blessing of Anderson, a holiday fanatic himself, the star tree-topper has crowned Christmas trees for hundreds of years. In fact, Anderson was so enamored with the holiday season that he invented his own style of ornament: pleated Christmas hearts.

Before high tech, energy efficient LED lights, there was garland. A decorative wreath or roping that is often draped above doors and, of course, around Christmas trees, garland has an impressive cultural history and, like tree-toppers, a number of literary nods, including being mentioned in Lewis Carroll’s, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” along with Edith Nesbit’s, “The Railway Children.”

With a massive range of possibilities – balsam, boxwood pine and cedar garland, among them – garland has been used by cultures across the globe for thousands of years. Whether you’re visiting one of many festivals in India or stopping by the in-laws’ house during the Christmas season, you can expect to see some form of garland.
